Worried about someone’s drinking?
You’re not overreacting.

Watching someone you love struggle with alcohol is hard. Most people don’t say yes to help the first time it comes up.

There may be an option they are more open to: doctor-led alcohol treatment at home, with you there to support them. You don’t have to work it out alone.

TRUST WHAT YOU’RE SEEING

If you’re asking the question, it’s worth looking into.

There’s no single test for when drinking becomes a problem. But some signs suggest your person may need more than willpower:

You don’t need to be sure. A short conversation with our team can help you make sense of what you’re seeing.

Please don’t push them to stop suddenly. If their body depends on alcohol, stopping all at once can be dangerous. Seizures or confusion need urgent medical help: call 999. For free, confidential advice, call Drinkline on 0300 123 1110 (weekdays 9am–8pm, weekends 11am–4pm).

  • They drink most days, or need a drink to feel normal.
  • They’ve tried to cut down or stop, and ended up back where they started.
  • They get shaky, sweaty, anxious or unwell when they don’t drink.
  • They hide how much they drink, or get defensive when it comes up.
  • Drinking is affecting their health, work, sleep or relationships.

YOU’VE PROBABLY HEARD THIS BEFORE

When help means rehab, saying no is easy.

Many people picture help as weeks away in a residential clinic. So they find reasons not to go. You may have heard some of these:

These reasons are real to them. The good news: for many people, there’s a way to get proper medical help that answers most of them.

“I can’t take a month off.”

With Clean Slate

Detox takes about a week at home. We advise a week off work, then minimal disruption to work or family life.

“I’m not going to rehab.”

With Clean Slate

No residential stay. They detox in their own home, if it’s safe for them.

“I can stop on my own.”

With Clean Slate

Stopping alone can be risky. A doctor manages their medication and a clinician checks in every day of detox.

“It always comes back.”

With Clean Slate

Detox is just the start. They get 11 months of aftercare, including their own clinician and facilitated SMART Recovery group sessions.

“I don’t want anyone to know.”

With Clean Slate

The service is confidential. They generally don’t need to tell their employer, and we only update their GP with their consent.

A DIFFERENT KIND OF HELP

Medical care at home. Support for a full year.

Clean Slate is a CQC-registered, doctor-led alcohol programme delivered at home. It follows the recommended clinical pathway: safe detox first, then ongoing support so the change lasts.

SAFETY FIRST

We’ll be honest about whether it’s right for them.

Home detox is a recognised treatment, but only for the right person. A clinician assesses every client, including blood tests, before any detox begins.

Home care may suit them if they…

  • Have a safe, stable place to stay during detox.
  • Have someone they trust to support them. That could be you.
  • Want medical help without a residential stay.
  • Want ongoing support after detox, especially if change hasn’t lasted before.

They may need closer care if they…

  • Have ever had withdrawal seizures, hallucinations or delirium (DTs).
  • Have serious medical, mental health or other drug use needs.
  • Don’t have a safe home or reliable support.

If home detox isn’t right for them, our team can point you both to other care, such as inpatient detox or local NHS alcohol services.

YOU’RE PART OF THIS

You don’t have to be their doctor.
Just be there.

Every Clean Slate client chooses a support person: someone they trust to be around during detox. If they choose you, we’ll invite you to one of their preparation appointments so you know what to expect.

What you’d do

  • Be nearby during detox week, mostly in the first few days.
  • Keep an eye on how they’re going, and call the team if you’re worried.
  • Help them stick with the plan, like attending check-ins.
  • Be someone they can talk to in the months after.

What you won’t have to do

  • Manage their medication. Their doctor and pharmacy do that.
  • Make medical calls. Their clinician checks in every day of detox.
  • Have all the answers. Our team is there for you too.
Do I have to be their support person?

No. They can choose another trusted person. But if they choose you, we’ll help you feel ready.

STARTING THE CONVERSATION

You don’t need the perfect words.

There’s rarely a perfect moment. These simple steps can help:

  1. Pick a calm time.

Not when they’ve been drinking, and not in the middle of an argument.

  2. Start with care, not blame.

Talk about what you’ve noticed and how you feel. “I’ve noticed…” works better than “You always…”.

  3. Keep the ask small.

You don’t need them to agree to quit today. Just to look at one option.

SOMETHING YOU COULD SAY

“I love you and I’ve been worried. I found a programme you can do from home, with a doctor. Would you take a 2-minute test to see if it could fit?”

If they say no, that’s okay. Many people need a few conversations. You can come back to it.

THEIR OWN TIME

If your person isn’t ready yet, that’s normal.

Many people we support questioned their drinking for years before finding help they could do from home.

Some book a call, then cancel because they’re scared. Later, they book again. Asking for help often starts with uncertainty.

Individual experiences and outcomes vary.

ONE SMALL STEP AT A TIME

Start with a conversation. No big decision today.

  1. You talk to our team.

A free, confidential call about your person, your worries and whether the programme could fit.

  2. They take the next step.

When they’re ready, they do the 2-minute suitability test or speak with us themselves. We can’t enrol anyone without their consent.

  3. A clinician assesses them.

Their doctor and clinician check their health and history, including blood tests, and build a plan with them.

  4. Detox at home.

About a week, with daily clinician check-ins and you nearby.

  5. 11 months of aftercare.

Their own clinician, group sessions and practical support to keep the change going.

Cost & cover

BEFORE YOU TAKE THE FIRST STEP

Questions families often ask.

Can I sign them up for the programme?
No. They need to agree to treatment and have a clinical assessment. You can talk to us first, and help them take the next step when they’re ready.
Will you contact them without my permission?
No. We won’t reach out to your person unless they contact us themselves or you’ve agreed together.
What if they say no?
That’s common. Many people need a few conversations before they’re ready. Our team can talk through ways to raise it again.
What if home detox isn’t right for them?
If the programme isn’t a safe fit, our team can point you both to other options, like inpatient detox or local NHS alcohol services.
How much does it cost?
£3,600 upfront, or £350 a month for 12 months (£4,200 total). Prescription medication is extra.
Do they have to quit forever?
Not necessarily. Some people want to stop. Others want to cut down or change their relationship with alcohol. Goals are set with them.
Do I have to be their support person?
No. They can choose another trusted person. But if they choose you, we’ll help you feel ready.
